Smart Systems are Failing the Supply Chain

We often hear from clients that they have a state-of-the-art “Smart Supply Chain Systems” in place.  You may have heard something similar about your own supply chain systems.  But what exactly does that mean?

SMART can be used as an acronym to describe modern supply chain systems:

  • Specific – Assumptions In Place
  • Measurable – Static Outcomes
  • Achievable – Feasible Forseeable Cases
  • Relevant – Limited Scope
  • Timely – Time Bound; Solves Today’s Problems

“SMART Supply Chain Systems” do what they do very well.  Tier One SCM vendors provide suites of products that can be compared to those in the Apple ecosystem, designed well for full compatability and ease of use within and between their own products.

Considering the iPhone, iPad, MacBook, Apple TV, Apple Watch, Apple Music, Homepod, and iPod, there is no debate that these products are smart and seamless within the walled garden of the Apple ecosystem.  However, anyone who has tried mixing Apple products with non-Apple products knows the frustration that stems from mixing systems that were never designed to be compatible with one another.  Escaping the walled gardens of state-of-the-art SMART Supply Chain Systems can likewise be exceedingly painful, challenging, and costly.

Within defined bounds, Supply Chain Systems can achieve goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely.  Smart solutions are great, but it is prudent to know where they fall short.  When specific underlying assumptions change, no number of upgrades and optimizations to a system will give it the agility to be SMART.

UCBOS is not a SMART solution, but it can lead enterprises to intelligent solutions and timely action through SENSING, LEARNING, ADAPTING, and EVOLVING.  It allows enterprise systems to function optimally when dealing with dynamic supply chains, leveraging the smart aspects of existing systems.

The war in Ukraine will likely reinforce plans for businesses to “reduce their reliance on intricate global supply chains,” according to a report issued this week by Oxford Economics.   Dun & Bradstreet data cites that 374,000 businesses rely on Russian suppliers – 90% of those businesses are in the USA. About 241,000 businesses rely on Ukrainian suppliers – 93% of those businesses are in the USA.

Let that sink in!  Basic underlying assumptions of supply chains are dynamic and must adapt to market variability to withstand the disruptions. So supply chain solutions must be agile and intelligent to support that as well.

UCBOS allows enterprises to use their existing systems as LEGO-like building blocks within an adaptable solution.  Composability allows agility.  Achievement of SMART goals at 10X speed becomes possible through consolidation and interpretation of data from multiple disparate systems, enabling enterprises to confront the specifics of current and future situations.  Unlearn reliance on a single solution and futureproof your business with UCBOS.
